Nigel Williams got his start at the age of nine selling his watercolors to tourists at a hotel where he grew up on the island of St. Maarten. He always had a love for both art and music and attended Berklee College of Music in 1992, earning a degree in Music Education. During those years, his pastel work was featured in an exhibition showcasing musicians who also painted at the college. He returned to the island in 1997 and studied with prominent local pastel artist Ruby Bute, who helped him understand the importance of using color to tell a story. He has exhibited at several St. Maarten banks and government institutions who count his works in their private collections.
In 2000, his solo show entitled “Harmony in Nature" at the Cultural Center of French St. Maarten was attended by some of the island's major artists—Sir Roland Richardson, Ruby Bute, and Cynric Griffith—with works purchased by the lieutenant governor of the island, among others. The artist relocated to Los Angeles later in the aughts to pursue his music career. He has recorded with R&B artist Chris Brown and toured with Tony Award-winning artist Heather Headley, 90's R&B hit makers Jodeci and many more.
While performing and touring with bands throughout the years, the artist continued to paint. When the pandemic brought an end to live performances, Nigel turned his attention in earnest to his love of the visual arts.
Incorporating course work and experience gained with artist Patti Mollica, who taught him the beauty of acrylics, Nigel commingles a bold and sophisticated palette to explore and present subjects that represent his experiences growing up on a Caribbean Island. His work is currently on display at Galerie Lakaye in Hollywood California.
